Deltiology means the study and collecting of postcards. This has been
a fairly hot hobby since the early 1900s in the United States and
worldwide. The first postcards began to appear in the mail service in
the mid 1800s - one London missive is postmarked 1840 and in the United
States there is a record of one posted in 1848. Usually the early cards
were hand painted or printed on stiff cardboard.
The high
point of postcard collecting was probably in the first quarter of the
20th Century. Many people still collect postcards for their nostalgia
factor. Some do concentrate on cards with town photos, however, there
are just as many who like the vintage holiday cards. The field is wide
and varied and room for interests of most people
