It’s not as boring as you might think http://playle.com/news/news.php?/archives/187-A-movie-about-old-postcards-Its-not-as-boring-as-you-might-think.html
The first time Sumner McKane mentioned publicly he was making a movie about old postcards, someone in the audience groaned, “Oh, no.” McKane could only laugh. He understood.

A filmmaker, musician and historian, he was underwhelmed with the idea himself. From the Lucky Strike billboards to the Chicago railway track that opened up travel to all, these tourist souvenirs were printed in their millions each year and offer a detailed journey into the past. They were taken in a decade when the United States was on the cusp of its Industrial Revolution bouncing back from the depression of the 1890s. Immigration was beginning to boom and while the country was still largely rural, pioneers such as JP Morgan and Andrew Carnegie were starting to shape history.

Complete Story

Postcard & Collectibles News ron@playle.com (Ron Playle) 2016-08-12T11:43:05Z http://playle.com/news/wfwcomment.php?cid=181 0 http://playle.com/news/rss.php?version=1.0&type=comments&cid=181 Spectacular hand-colored postcards of 19th-century Venice http://playle.com/news/news.php?/archives/180-Spectacular-hand-colored-postcards-of-19th-century-Venice.html
These postcards of Belle Époque Venice were printed by the Detroit Publishing Company using the Photochrom process, a time-consuming and exacting technique by which convincing layers of artificial color are applied to black and white photos and reproduced.

Complete Story

Postcard & Collectibles News ron@playle.com (Ron Playle) 2016-07-17T11:53:39Z http://playle.com/news/wfwcomment.php?cid=180 0 http://playle.com/news/rss.php?version=1.0&type=comments&cid=180
