They were dominated by photographs taken by companies like Johnston and Hoffman, prints by Thacker, Spink & Co., or oleographs by Raphael Tuck and Sons – which were also based on photographs. Take for example this series of six postcards of Calcutta. The pastel shades and dramatic skies mark significant deviations from the standard images of the city that were in circulation. The artist may or may not have used photographs as reference, but unlike most photographs that depict churches, public buildings or trams, these drawings recall a city that is bustling with people. Indians and Europeans seem to share space on his vibrant canvases without indication of social hierarchy. But who is this Frank Clinger Scallan whose name appears in each one of these paintings.

Complete Story

Postcard & Collectibles News ron@playle.com (Ron Playle) 2017-03-03T13:08:26Z http://playle.com/news/wfwcomment.php?cid=191 0 http://playle.com/news/rss.php?version=1.0&type=comments&cid=191 Alan Turing postcard with 'hidden riddle' sells for £28,000 at auction http://playle.com/news/news.php?/archives/190-Alan-Turing-postcard-with-hidden-riddle-sells-for-28,000-at-auction.html
Taken at face value, it is nothing more than a postcard of a religious painting, sent by a holidaymaker to one of his closest friends. The signature on the back, however, suggests that all might not be what it seems. Sent by the legendary cryptologist Alan Turing to his psychologist Dr Franz Greenbaum, it appears to be a coded reference to one of history’s most enduring mathematical puzzles, as well as a possible hint to his thoughts of suicide.

Complete Story

Postcard & Collectibles News ron@playle.com (Ron Playle) 2017-02-12T18:01:08Z http://playle.com/news/wfwcomment.php?cid=190 0 http://playle.com/news/rss.php?version=1.0&type=comments&cid=190 Stunning postcards from 1890 capture life in the seaside towns and ruined castles of Scotland http://playle.com/news/news.php?/archives/189-Stunning-postcards-from-1890-capture-life-in-the-seaside-towns-and-ruined-castles-of-Scotland.html
Over a century ago, these spectacular shots were given an injection of colour to bring them to life. It’s not as boring as you might think http://playle.com/news/news.php?/archives/187-A-movie-about-old-postcards-Its-not-as-boring-as-you-might-think.html
The first time Sumner McKane mentioned publicly he was making a movie about old postcards, someone in the audience groaned, “Oh, no.” McKane could only laugh. He understood. A filmmaker, musician and historian, he was underwhelmed with the idea himself. He only agreed to spend time with the collection of early-20th-century black-and-white postcards as a favor to a friend at the Penobscot Marine Museum in Searsport, which owns the collection. He didn’t think it would lead to anything. Instead, his reluctant dive into the museum’s vast collection of glass-plate negatives from the Eastern Illustrating & Publishing Co. opened a time capsule to a century ago and led to McKane’s third feature-length film, “The Northeast by Eastern.”

Complete Story

Postcard & Collectibles News ron@playle.com (Ron Playle) 2016-12-11T16:39:00Z http://playle.com/news/wfwcomment.php?cid=187 0 http://playle.com/news/rss.php?version=1.0&type=comments&cid=187 These incredible color postcards of 1890 Switzerland are anything but neutral http://playle.com/news/news.php?/archives/188-These-incredible-color-postcards-of-1890-Switzerland-are-anything-but-neutral.html
These postcards from the Detroit Publishing Company capture the natural grandeur of Switzerland at a time when true color photography was still in its infancy.
